War Deaths

This is not supposed to be a history lesson so it is not appropriate to discuss the vast death tolls in the two world wars.

The UK deaths in the Falklands War numbered 261 men plus 3 civilian women accidentally killed by shell fire (100% men as regards service personnel).

The UK war deaths in Iraq were 173 men and 6 women (97% men).

The UK war deaths in Afghanistan were 450 men and 3 women (99.3% men).

The small numbers of women killed in conflicts compares with the following percentages of the armed services who are women.

Percentage of UK Armed Services who are Women

Service Below Officer Rank Officers
Navy 8.9% 10.0%
Army 8.3% 11.8%
Royal Air Force 13.1% 16.7%
